There's a version of YouTube growth that nobody wants to talk about because it's not exciting. No virality. No trends. No personality-driven luck. Just a repeatable process that compounds over months and years. I've used it to upload and rank over 4,000 videos, and a huge number of them are still generating views and revenue today, some of them years after I hit publish.
Here's the core idea: boring beats exciting over a long enough timeline.
Two Ways a Video Gets Found
There are a lot of ways people discover videos, but two matter most here.
The first is browse. This is the viral path. You get a spike of views, and then the video dies out. It's exciting while it lasts, but it's not something you can plan for or repeat on demand.
The second is search. People type in a specific problem, your video shows up near the top, and they click. Search traffic is far more stable, and it's the traffic that actually builds a business over time instead of just a good week.
The entire strategy fits in one sentence: find a problem people already search for, answer it completely, then wait.
That sentence hides a lot of detail, so let's break it down.
Proof It Works
One video I made was positioned directly in front of my ideal audience, and I didn't even have a channel following at the time. Eighty percent of its views come from YouTube search, and 204 days after publishing, it's still generating watch time, subscribers, and revenue. No subscriber base needed for it to work. Just the right topic, answered well, sitting where people are already looking.
Another example comes from a completely different niche: gardening. That video is seven years old and still bringing in views and sales today, because the problem it solves hasn't gone away, and neither has the answer.
How to Start This Week
- Pick one broad topic you already know something about. It could be AI, tech, gardening, whatever. It needs to be broad enough to hold multiple problems, but not so broad that it says nothing. Think of it as one umbrella loose enough to cover a handful of specific problems underneath it.
- List ten specific problems inside that topic. The more specific, the better. "How to create a SaaS demo video" beats "SaaS marketing tips" because it tells you exactly who's searching for it and why. Most people searching that phrase are business owners either running a SaaS or about to start one. Specific problems attract specific people, and specific people convert.
- Decide the offer before you decide the video. Your video needs to solve a real problem, and your offer needs to sit naturally inside that solution. Find the product you want to promote first, then find the problem it solves, then build the video around solving that problem completely. When a video actually helps someone, the trust it builds is what gets people to buy.
- Publish one video that answers one problem completely. Not ten problems crammed into one video. One specific problem, fully solved. Build a library of these over time, each one aimed at a different problem inside your broader topic.
- Track what converts, then repeat it. You'll probably need to publish somewhere between 50 and 100 videos before a clear pattern shows up. That's the part nobody enjoys hearing, but it's also the part that compounds. Once you see a video pulling its weight, whether that's through views, watch time, or actual sales, study why it's working and do more of exactly that. Don't reinvent the format. Read the data and repeat what already works.
Why This Works Long After You Publish
The reason these videos keep performing months and years later comes down to one thing: the problem they solve hasn't disappeared. As long as people keep searching "how to create a SaaS demo video" or "how to grow bay leaves," a video that answers that question completely will keep showing up, keep getting clicked, and keep converting.
This isn't a strategy that rewards speed. It rewards patience, specificity, and a willingness to keep publishing even when the first 40 or 50 videos don't show much. But once the pattern clicks, it keeps paying out on its own, long after you've moved on to the next problem.
