An audience is a liability wearing a goal's clothes. That sounds harsh, but the results below came from a completely different approach: no audience, no followers, just videos positioned in front of the right people.
What nobody tells you about audiences
You have to feed it constantly. It decays the moment you stop, which means uploading every single day just to keep it alive. One bad video and the trust cracks. And worst of all, it locks you into one identity forever, tied to one channel, one persona, one personal brand you can never really step away from.
An audience versus a library
Here's the real difference. An audience needs you. A library of videos doesn't. So instead of building an audience, build a library of videos, and position that library in front of the right faces, people who actually want to buy something from you.
Browse versus search: two very different ways people find you
Browse gives you a crowd. It's the virality boost, the algorithm pushing your video in front of a wide audience for a moment. Search gives you something better: people who already need what you're offering.
One browse video took 184 days to slowly bump up, went viral, and then plummeted right back down. Nothing lasting came from it. Compare that to a search based video, which started picking up traffic right from the start and kept climbing. About 75% of viewers found that video through YouTube search, and it's still growing. On top of the AdSense revenue, digital products sold directly through that same video brought in thousands of dollars a month.
Decide the offer before you make the video
This is the most important step, and it comes before you ever hit record. Decide what you're helping people with, and have the offer, digital product, or software ready before the video exists. The video is built around the offer, not the other way around.
The evergreen example: bay leaf propagation
A video on how to propagate bay leaf from cuttings, a small, specific topic in the gardening niche, was uploaded seven years ago. It's still generating views and still generating sales today, because people still have the exact same problem, and the video is still a direct solution to it. That's the whole model in one example.
Trends are a treadmill, keywords are a path
Chasing trends keeps you running in place. Building around keywords with long term thinking builds an actual library of evergreen videos people keep watching. And the target isn't just curiosity. It's buyer intent. There's a real difference between someone curious about a topic and someone actively searching with intent to solve a problem they're ready to pay for. Aim for the second one, and the people watching your videos are far more likely to buy something along the way.
Patience beats talent
A search based growth curve looks a lot like a patience curve: slow at first, then steady, then compounding. Start today, stay consistent, and a year from now you could realistically be running a $3,000 to $5,000 a month channel. This isn't reserved for a talented few. Anyone can take this approach.
Track what converts, not what gets views
You don't need people to love you. You don't need an audience or fans, and realistically, most people watching this won't build one anyway, because that's a 1% game. What you need is one video that solves one problem. That's step one. From there, building a library that solves multiple problems becomes straightforward.
