What the numbers mean

The formula

(likes + comments + shares) ÷ views × 100. Use the same inputs every time so month to month comparisons mean something.

The benchmark

2% to 5% by views is normal for long form. Under 1% usually points at a title promising something the video does not deliver.

What to do with it

Track it per video, not per channel. The videos with the highest rate tell you which specific topics your viewers actually wanted, and those are the ones worth building more of.

Questions/ 03

Common questions

How do you calculate YouTube engagement rate?

Add likes, comments and shares, divide by the number of views, then multiply by 100. That gives engagement rate by views, which is the version most brands ask for. Engagement rate by subscribers uses the same top number divided by subscriber count instead.

What is a good YouTube engagement rate?

By views, anything from 2% to 5% is solid for long form video, above 5% is strong, and under 1% usually means the topic attracted clicks the video did not satisfy. Small channels often post higher rates than large ones because their viewers are more self selected.

Should I include shares and saves?

Include them if you can see them in YouTube Studio, since they are real engagement signals. Just be consistent. Comparing a rate that includes shares against one that does not will make your numbers look better than they are.

Why is engagement rate by subscribers different?

Views come from anyone who finds the video, subscribers are only the people already following you. When engagement by subscribers is much higher than 100% of your usual pattern, most of your views are coming from outside your subscriber base, which is exactly what you want from an asset built to keep getting found.

Does engagement rate affect ranking?

Not directly as a single number, but the behaviour behind it does. Watch time, comments and repeat viewing all tell YouTube the video satisfied the person who clicked, and that is what moves a video up over time.

Is engagement rate the number sponsors care about?

Sponsors look at average views first, then engagement rate as a quality check. A channel with 20,000 average views and 4% engagement is usually worth more per deal than one with 60,000 views and 0.4%.
